Cross-country travel - the term brings back vague recollections of a family driving through a lonely desert highway in an old 1960 Chevrolet, with one child laying above the back seats, two or three others below throwing socks at each other (in case you are wondering why none of us were wearing seatbelts they didn't arrive on the scene until 1966!)
Mom and Dad, detached from the backseat activities would banter over whether or not to stop at the orange and turquoise Stuckey's. From behind the front seat, legs and arms would untangle long enough to watch the speedometer would Dad actually exit for the one and o nly pit-stop for the day? And no long distance trip was complete without a bark from the driver's seat, Do I need to pull this car over? which would charge the entire car, hysterics muffled, to sit erect with hands in laps for a moment.
We delight in those memories and even though Stuckey's is an endangered species, we pine to gi ve our children the same opportunity for memories of family road trips that will raise a smile for years to come.
Check out our May-June 2007 Family Travel issue - it's loaded with ideas for this summer and year-round fun family travel destinations. Have a great trip... and unlike the station wagon days of oh-so long ago - don't forget to buckle-up!
